Pregnant on Diwali? Diwali is a huge Indian Hindu Festival, which Hindus all around the world celebrate. Considering the same, there are many rituals which link to Diwali. These include, the celebrations, spreading love, meeting friends and your people, exchanging sweets, and everything else. These all are the reasons why a person can say that he has had a really great Diwali. You know that, right? Well, for a going to be a mother, it is a bit different. Pregnant on Diwali? Make the Best out of it with These Precautions!

You can join in the fun and enjoy the puja, feasting, presents, and fireworks as usual. But there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Dress comfortably this Diwali and wear comfortable and supportive footwear. Choose cotton clothes as synthetics catch fire easily.
  • Don’t light fireworks or crackers that require you to run to a safe distance before the explosion. Choose instead the hand-held sparklers. This will reduce the possibility of you falling or hurting yourself.
  • If possible, light up the night with diyas, lanterns and electrical lighting instead of fireworks and crackers. This will reduce the pollution you and your growing baby are exposed to.
  • If you need to bend and touch many a family member’s feet, bend your knees to go down rather than your back. Have your husband close by so he can support you as you bend and get up. Also, if your bump is large and bending is uncomfortable, aim for the knees of your elders rather than the ankles or actual feet. Your family members will surely be understanding to your condition and be happy with the gesture.

What to Eat on Diwali during Pregnancy?

No celebration is complete without special treats and sweets! Here are some things to keep in mind so that you can make healthy choices:

  • It is better to eat less and often rather than big quantities in one go. Indigestion, acidity, and heartburn are common pregnancy complaints that get worse when you eat a lot at once. Sweet, fatty, spicy and deep-fried foods can all aggravate acidity. Most festive foods are either very sweet or fried so eat them with moderation.
  • If you have gestational diabetes, speak to your doctor about which foods you should avoid altogether and what precautions to take during the festive season.
  • If you are eating food at a restaurant or chaat at a Diwali mela, be careful about food hygiene. It is easier for you to get infections during pregnancy because your immune system is slightly weaker.
  • Keep a count on how much caffeine you are drinking or eating. Caffeine is not only in cold drinks, tea, and coffee but also in chocolate. It crosses the placenta and reaches your baby. Only up to 200mg of caffeine, a day is considered safe during pregnancy.
